Welcome to Year 5

The Year 5 Staff

The Year 5 teachers are: Ms Bobat in 5FB and Mr Dowling in 5MD. Miss Bick is our other teaching and learning adult in Y5 Mrs Lowe will be teaching in our classes every other Tuesday covering PPA, when they will learn Art, Spanish, Music and Computing.

We are starting off with a history-led topic. We will be learning all about the Anglo-Saxons and the Scots and what influences from that era is still evident today and the Vikings - ruthless killers or peaceful settlers?

We will be learning all about these civilisations: where they came from, why they came to Britain, their cultural and religious beliefs as well as the impact they have had on our lives - even today! This is an incredibly fascinating knowledge-rich topic, which children will thoroughly enjoy.

PE will be on Mondays and Thursdays for 5MD and Thursday and Friday for 5FB. Please ensure your child comes to school in the correct PE uniform on these days. Children will still need to wear their ties on PE days.

Children take home a school reading book, which they can change on a Tuesday and Friday. Each week, children should aim to read their home reading book every week night – at least 20 minutes! Children can also choose a class reading book from the class shelf and have opportunities to read in school every day. Children also have been given Times Tables Rock Star logins. Practising their times tables is part of their weekly homework expectation.

Our doors are always open for you! If you need to speak to any of the Y5 staff, you can catch us at the beginning or end of the school day. Alternatively, you can ring the office to arrange a meeting at a convenient time.

Our class novel this term is: Viking Boy by Tony Bradman 

This is an excellent story about a boy called Gunnar, who is the son of a Viking chieftain. His peaceful life is shattered when raiders led by Skuli kill his father and destroy his home. Gunnar swears vengeance and vows to save his mother, embarking on a dangerous journey filled with battles, mythical creatures, and an ultimate destiny.
